Columbia County
Columbia County is situated in the northern end of the Hudson Valley, framed by the Taconic and Berkshire Mountains along the Massachusetts border to the East and the Hudson River marking our western border with the the Catskill Mountains just beyond that. Here you will find rolling hills, woodlands, country roads, sweeping vistas, and small villages and hamlets. Family farms dot the landscape fueling the farm to table restaurant scene from here to Brooklyn. There is vibrant art and entertainment culture here and many historical sights scattered across the county. You will also find thriving small businesses, boutiques, farm stands, and tasting rooms throughout the county. We are about 2 hours from Manhattan via Amtrak or car and 40 minutes to Albany making it an easy escape for a weekend away or close enough for the occasional commuter. The first stewards of this fertile land we call Columbia County were the Mohicans (The People of the Waters that Are Never Still) long before the Dutch and other Europeans arrived. At their height, the Mohicans and an affiliated tribe, the Munsee extended across six States from southwest Vermont, the entire Hudson river valley of New York from Lake Champlain to Manhattan, western Massachusetts up to the Connecticut River valley, Northwest Connecticut, and portions of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. They were pushed out of the area by European and early American settlers, first to the east where they briefly settled in Stockbridge, MA, only to be pushed out again. They eventually landed in Wisconsin on a reservation where they still reside today as the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians.
